Momento Vita
Nayantara
In another life we were stumbling down the dark streets, searching,
But in this life we are sitting here in this room
Bending light.
When you confess to me that you’re not quite sure where we’re going
I’m sadly not sure I know what to say. You batter me with questions:
Where did the bees go? Why have the stars moved so far away?
Do you remember when we were toes-in-the-dirt scraped-knees raw?
Remember soil between our teeth and fingers,
And how we dug into the skin of fruit with our nails?
Where did the sun go, and why did they do that and-
Let’s hold still. Join hands, and scream. Let’s look up at the sky.
I see a cloud of starlings, a freshly frozen snowdrop
Your cold breath hanging in the air, mingling with my own
And here we are, still together in this room.
Last time we were crying over this life
But this time I’m telling you that it’s good we are alive.
